Getting the Simple things Right: Innovation at the TMRU

On Thursday, Sept 19, 2019, the museum hosted Reflections on Innovations: the TMRU Story. Our panelists Prof. Em. Ann Ashworth, Prof. Em. David Picou and Prof. Em. Michael Golden shared their early experiences in the unit and the impact it had on their professional lives.

Through the Eyes of the Youth

What do you see when you look at Historic Ruins? Do you see the colors that once brilliantly glowed under the sun or do you just see an old dull structure from a time before your existence? How does an individual’s background shape his or her vision and interpretation of historic sites? It is said that a picture can tell a thousand words but how many more words can a painting tell, if any at all?

Running with the Baton

The UWI Museum is truly a community built space and I am honored to have selected to maintain and expand this treasure. I salute Dr. Suzanne Francis-Brown who worked tirelessly and, with your support created a solid foundation for me to build upon. Suzanne has worked closely with me to facilitate this transition and I am extremely grateful for her support and willingness to share institutional knowledge.
As a UWI alum, I would like to take this opportunity to share a little about myself and my initial plan for the museum over the next few years.

A/V: GROWING UP ON WEST ROAD, MONA

Carolyn Chan grew up knowing the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies as her backyard. She considers herself a ‘West Road-ian’, having literally been born at #2 West Road when her father, Wilfred Chan, was in the Chemistry Department of the UWI Mona Campus. But the family also lived for some years at College Common, the other major housing area on the campus, where the Vice-Chancellor, professors, lecturers and senior administrators lived and where their children remember the 1960s and early 1970s as a time of freedom to roam and grow.
