Alumni Ambassador scores Chevening!

Franz George is a Lecturer, Organisational Consultant and Youth Advocate. He has lectured Sociology and Caribbean Studies at the 6th form level for the past 2 years. He is also the lead Organisational Consultant for his consultancy, Lydian Stone Consulting. Through his consultancy, he helps organisations to identify their problems, and helps them to develop and implement interventions. Franz is also very passionate about youth advocacy. Since 2018, he has been serving as the Caribbean and Americas Region Representative of the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC).

Bahamian Medic remembered

Dr. Phillip Thompson was a 1975 graduate of The University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Dr. Thompson wasted no time in returning to the West Indies from Scotland in 1983, then becoming the preeminent General Surgeon in the Bahamas in the later years of the 20th Century.

New Campus Registrar for Cave Hill

The UWI Cave Hill Campus has announced that Mr. Rommel Carter, who was the Director of Human Resources at Cave Hill, has been appointed to the post of Campus Registrar. He is also a proud UWI graduate

Given the international concerns and reactions that arose in relation to George Floyd’s  death, the opportunity to host a series of online events to highlight the forensic pathology issues associated with the investigation of Deaths in Custody presented itself and a trilogy of symposia was conceptualised and planned by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Washington, DC who were to otherwise host a previously planned in-person conference in Washington in June 2020.

Pamela Coke-Hamilton

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced that UWI alumna, Pamela Coke-Hamilton has been appointed as the Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC), which is the joint agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) for trade and international business development.

She holds an undergraduate degree in international relations from The UWI and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University

UWI Cave Hill Has a New Head of the Academy of Sport

Dr. Rudolph Alleyne is the new Head of the Academy of Sport at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Cave Hill campus.

Alleyne, who previously held the post of Academic Programme Co-ordinator at The UWI Cave Hill campus, takes over as the Head from Amanda Reifer.

Alleyne brings a wealth of knowledge with him as he has lectured in Exercise and Sport Psychology, Diversity and Multiculturalism, Sociology of Sport, Social Psychology of Sport, Exercise Physiology, and Ethics in Sport.

UWI Alumna Claudia Grant “sails” forth!

Thirty-four years after starting her career at the Port of Kingston in 1986, Claudia Grant is now second in command at the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), serving as Deputy Director General.  She entered the field after she graduated from The UWI with a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Studies.

UWI Grad elected Mayor

UWI Alumna, Phelecia Nembhard was elected mayor of the city of New Carrolton in Maryland in June 2020. She is the first female and first person of colour to be elevated to that position.

She graduated with a degree in management and accounting from The UWI and in 1996, she was recognised as Student of the Year at UWI. Then migrated to the United States. She worked with Sun Trust Bank and then went to Presidential Bank, as a regional manager. She has always seen herself as a community activist rather than a politician.

The UWI Connection to Kamala Harris

You might be interested to know that Kamala Harris - the first black woman and Jamaican/South Asian American to become a vice presidential candidate in the USA has a connection to UWI through her father. 

Her father is Donald J. Harris, who is not only a graduate of the UWI (to be specific a 1960 B. A degree holder of the UCWI) but he was also the Director of the Consortium Graduate School of Social Sciences at UWI from 1986-87. He is Jamaican and is a Professor Emeritus (Economics) of Stanford University.
