Taking Caribbean Sport to a Higher Level
The Mona Academy of Sport is extremely proud of the UWI students who were a part of the Jamaican men’s team for the recent Hockey 5s Pan American World Cup Qualifiers. The UWI students were Goalkeeper, Rasheed Johnston (in orange), Shemar Gordon (front row, 4th from left) who also served as a vice-captain. In the second row, are brothers Kevon and Christopher Reid (3rd and 4th from left). Team Jamaica booked their spot on June 11th after beating Paraguay 5-2 to join the USA and Trinidad and Tobago for the World Cup scheduled for January 2024 in Muscat, Oman. Rasheed is a first year student in the BSc Sport Kinetics programme. Shemar is finalising in BSc Psychology. Kevon is a first year student pursuing BSc. Economics while Christopher is finalising in BSc International Relations.
The Jamaica Hockey Federation was the first organisation to sign a MOU with the Mona Academy of Sport. Since 2017, the Academy has provided sports medicine services to the athletes. Head of the Mona Academy of Sport, Dr. Sharmella Roopchand-Martin is elated at this successful outcome for Team Jamaica as she has witnessed the positive impact of the strength and conditioning programmes developed for the players by the Academy.
With this historic win, we wish Team Jamaica every success in the 2024 Hockey 5s World Cup.
