UWI memories and musings - Sept 2022 by From Julie Coulton

It was a pleasant morning walk around Ring Road. Memories of growing up in 1973 on the University Campus grounds start to flow ... bicycle riding around the ring with my friends Beverly and Allyson (good friends to this day) , dance classes on empty lecture classroom tile floors during the summer ; tennis, swimming and movie nights (that creaky film reel still sticks in my mind ) at the Senior Common Room (SCR) where my dad was once the president and treasurer (and where his name still adorns the plaque at the bar as the winner of the SCR Men's Tennis Singles Championship in 1972); attending University of the West Indies in 1982 and coming into my own after the disappointment of my high school years (except for sixth form). I was no longer the shy, introverted kid ... suddenly I fit in ... here it was okay to be me. I didn't realize I knew so many people and I made so many more friends, even had my dad as my lecturer for one of my courses Organizational Theory & Behavior (OTB ) . It was quite an interesting experience being taught by your father .  Then there was the time I met my soon to be husband and not realizing it... years later we laugh at that ; studying communications/ journalism so I could eventually become an elementary school teacher  ; designing carnival costumes and jumping mass. Fond memories of a very special time in my life.
