A/V: Sound System Talk Raises Issues of Change & Decay

The Sound System is one of the Jamaican musical institutions celebrated in the unique posters of Michael ‘Freestylee’ Thompson whose work has been exhibited in the UWI Museum; and one of the Jamaican musical gifts to many parts of the world. Indeed the world may celebrate aspects of sound systems that Jamaica no longer generates. This is the lament of Anthony Myers who runs Jam One International and who is co-founder and chair of the Jamaica Sound System Federation..

REGGAE TALKS! Inside Freestylee Roots Exhibition

The work of Jamaican poster artist Michael ‘Freestylee’ Thompson, who defined himself as an Artist Without Borders, has been in focus within the UWI Museum, and we’re broadening the scope with a talk and discussion session we’re calling Reggae Talks!
This takes place on Jan 25 at 5pm – just one day before we dismount the Freestylee Roots exhibition of a collection of 50 of Thompson’s works that has been up since December 5, and send them on their way north-west to the Montego Bay Airport which will be their future home.

GUEST POST: The Past is Now: Birmingham and the British Empire

Decolonisation is a process that many once considered to have been accomplished but which increasingly is being re-identified for action. Rachael Minott worked on an exhibition running at the Birmingham Museum in the UK that sets out to expose the active links between past and present. We asked her to tell us about it:
