Owen Arthur: The Activist Prime Minister

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, in tribute to the late
Rt. Honourable Owen Arthur.
Arthur was authorised by the elders of his era to lead the economic development charge of the region. As a consequence, there was no other passion that competed with his commitment to the economic advancement of Caribbean people.

. “Owen Arthur, without a doubt, is one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century Caribbean. Emerging from the second generation of nation builders he was a successful champion of the most important discourses of his time. We knew him as a quintessential regionalist and a leader in development economics. He was also a humanist with deep commitment to social justice.”

UWI to Protect CARICOM in the European Union New Partnership with EUI set to deepen ties

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the European University Institute (EUI), is expected to deepen ties between the Caribbean and Europe and help The UWI protect the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in the European Union (EU).

The UWI extends condolences on the passing of Dame Edris Mercier Bird PhD, DCN

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) joins the nation of Antigua and Barbuda in mourning the passing of Dame Edris Bird.Dame Edris, an educator par excellence, was the Resident Tutor for The UWI Open Campus in Antigua and Barbuda, then known as the Department of Extra-Mural Studies and later, The School of Continuing Studies. She was a stalwart leader in education and a symbol of selfless humanity. She served at the University from 1965 to 1990.
