MSc. Sport ( Biomechanics, Coaching, Kinetics, Strength & Conditioning)

Overview

PROGRAMME SUMMARY:

The Master of Science in Sport with specialization is being designed for Physical Education teachers, coaches, athletic trainers, therapists and other professionals with undergraduate degrees in sport or related disciplines who wish to pursue advanced studies in Sport.  Candidates will complete a total of 39 credits and pursue one of four specializations: Strength & Conditioning, Biomechanics, Kinetics and Coaching. Online courses covering theory and applied science will culminate in a face to face practicum each year.

The objectives of this programme are to:

  • Expand the pool of regional Sport specialists, researchers, technicians, advocates
  • Build a repository of relevant Caribbean Sport research
  • Balance the regional sporting talent with qualified Sport professionals
  • Equip sport professionals to use scientific and evidence-based practices in all aspects of Sport
  • Provide pathways for educators, trainers, coaches, athletes and therapists to upgrade their professions
  • Advance Sport in the region by exposing professionals to cutting edge practices
  • Provide a flexible, competitive, cost-effective programme that will attract non-Caribbean Sport professionals.

Students who pursue the graduate diploma will complete a total of 27 credits and will not be required to do a research project.

Admission Requirements/Prerequisites:

The minimum requirement for admission to either the Graduate Diploma or the MSc. Sport programme shall be:

i.  bachelor’s degree in a Sport or Sport-related discipline with GPA 2.5 and above and/or at least a lower second-class honours in a relevant discipline (eg. Sport, Education, Humanities and Education, Social Sciences, Science and Technology) from a university approved by The University of the West Indies. Applicants with less than lower second-class honours or the minimum GPA will be considered if they have significant working experience in a sport related field.

OR

ii.  bachelor’s degree from a Teachers’ College with a minimum GPA equivalent to UWI GPA of 2.5.

OR

iii.  Students who do not possess a first degree can matriculate under the mature matriculation requirements of the UWI. This will include submission of: a Portfolio that documents Coaching experience and accomplishments; Statement of Purpose, Professional References, Interviews.
