Dear UWI Community,
WHEN THE WORDS ARE HARD TO SAY, LET YOUR PRESENCE SPEAK.
This World Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, the University Health Centre's University Counselling Service, invites our entire UWI Campus community to see suicide prevention as focused on safety and embedded in culture and community.
Across our diverse Caribbean communities, conversation, storytelling, music, movement, art, spirituality, nature, ancestral and other culturally meaningful practices may help us reconnect, but when someone is thinking about suicide, connection must also become action. Ask directly and compassionately about suicide; listen without shame or judgement; stay present; and connect the person promptly with trained professional support. Where there is imminent danger or an inability to remain safe, do not leave the person alone: activate urgent assessment and facilitate emergency support.
We do not have to carry the heaviness alone.
Sometimes our first act of collective healing is simply to notice, ask, listen, stay and help connect one another to safety.
