Passing of Emeritus Professor Funso Aiyejina

The Faculty of Sport mourns the passing of Emeritus Professor Funso Aiyejina, our former Head of the St. Augustine Academy of Sport. He served as Head of the Academy from August 2018 - July 2021.

Professor Funso Aiyejina was appointed as acting Head of the St Augustine Academy of Sport in 2018.  His vast institutional knowledge equipped him to design an administrative structure to advance not only the Academy, but the entire Faculty of Sport across all campuses. His expertise in teaching pedagogy provided all students with a global UWI experience. His interpersonal expertise and sense of fairness endeared him to all.

He successfully steered the academy through the COVID-19 pandemic. As a literary virtuoso, he initiated and edited the Faculty’s fortnightly column in the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian and later the Jamaica Gleaner. This led to the compilation publication ‘Sport Matters - Views from The UWI Faculty of Sport’, 2019–2020, which he edited.

His immense contribution to the Academy will ripple timelessly and his unique eloquence and style will always be celebrated. Whereas he will be remembered as a giant in Caribbean Literature, he will always remain a part of the history of the Faculty of Sport.

Our sincerest condolences to his family.
