Have You Ever Heard Of ABC Hall?
Submitted by curator on
Do you know this entrance, or location? For the few who do know, this is a photo of the entrance to ABC Hall. Located on the Nurses’ Residence along the UHWI Ring Road, the Alston Barry Chevannes (ABC) Hall welcomed its first set of Spartans in 2011. Resident students created their own identity over the years, standing proudly in their Spartan orange. Unfortunately, the hall never got to the heights they aspired for. It was permanently closed, in 2022, thus bringing to a close a decade of Spartan life and culture.
Unknown by many, and wiped from the campus landscape by its closure, students today would not consider it a premiere hall of residence. However, for those who lived there, they saw themselves as Warriors of Sparta, the 300 that King Leonidas took with him into battle.
To mark the legacy of The ABC, the UWI Museum is engaging in an object collection drive. Do you want to share your memories of ABC Hall? Do you have memorabelia? We are interested in what you have to share. These collections will support our upcoming display The Untold 300: Recalling the ABC Spartans. Contact uwi.museum@uwimona.edu.jm for more information.
