Sickle Cell Clinic
The SCU is the only comprehensive sickle cell centre in the English speaking Caribbean. Its core functions revolve around healthcare, education and research. With regards to healthcare, its primary role is the diagnosis and provision of quality health maintenance services to its patients and as a consultative service for others. At the same time, it offers a secondary acute day-care service. Both services complement each other, are important to patients and are necessary to support the research agenda.
With regards to health visits, ~ 3000 patients visit the clinic each year, accounting for ~ 9000 health visits annually. Roughly 20-30 % of these visits are for routine health maintenance; the remainder are sick / emergency (day-care) visits. Whilst not all sick visits are disease related, most emergency visits are.
