ON THE ROAD: Roots of that Royal Charter!

by Suzanne Francis-Brown, UWI Museum Curator
One of my bucket list items this past few weeks was tracking early documents relating to the UWI’s lost Charter – the first Royal Charter, granted in 1949 and lost in a plane crash en route to the founding Mona campus in Jamaica. Some of those documents are on deposit at the UK National Archives, and they include  explanations of why a Royal Charter was considered the best option as the nascent university developed its governance and administrative structures.

Something has happened to me over the past few years. Now, when I visit museums, the artifacts are taking second place to the story, the presentation, the infrastructure…

ON THE ROAD: Topping Up!

by Suzanne Francis-Brown, Curator
One major reason for going on the road was to do, close up, research on some UWI artifacts that we’ve been trying to do from a distance for some time.
Which artifacts? Well there’s the lost Charter, and the Coat of Arms, the university standard or flag, and more diaries than we knew existed. And that’s not quite all.

PELICANS: ARTIFACTS & RESEARCH RESOURCES TOO

Some artifacts have particularly rich potential as research resources. At the UWI Museum, one close to our hearts is the Pelican magazine – a student production of the 1950s – 1970s that is jam-packed with contemporaneous reports on student life inside the young university, starting with its years as the University College of the West Indies (UCWI).
