Cognisant that today’s youth, while possessing some academic qualification, lack the necessary interpersonal skills needed to function in the working environment Miss Faith Richards, teacher of The Ellerslie School conceptualised the idea that a programme was necessary to address the dearth of competencies which will undoubtedly affect the students’ lives as they seek jobs and places in institutions of higher education.

The UWIMAA has Partnered with Internal Medicine Learning Collaborative to Share Lecture Series to UWI Medical Alumni Across the World.

Dr. B. Permashwar is the founder and director of the Internal Medicine Learning Collaborative series carried in the UWI Alumni Soft and Life Skills Series -he sees this as a simple way of sharing medical knowledge and expertise and promoting collaboration with physicians to achieve better patient experience and outcome. Dr. Permashwar studied medicine at the UWI, Mona and graduated in 1995. 

Curt Claude Bodkyn’s Story

I have a keen interest in improving the outcome for children with cancer in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean region. Following my undergraduate training in medicine, I trained for 10 years in the UK specializing in Paediatrics with a subspecialty in Paediatric Oncology. 

Melissa Jack’s Story

My name is Melissa Jack and I’m currently a Year 4 Medical Student at The UWI ST. Augustine Campus (STA). I am a 24-year-old national of Trinidad and Tobago who enjoys Music and Sports. I am the UWI STA Guild Faculty of Medical Sciences Representative and the Medical Sciences Student Council Chairperson for the year 2021-2022. Additionally, I am also the Public Relations Officer for the Mt. Hope Surgical Society and the National Exchange Officer (NEO) for the Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) within the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Students Association (TTMSA). 

UWI American Foundation & UWItv host roundtable on reparatory justice to mark Caribbean American heritage month

The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI), and UWItv will host a virtual roundtable in celebration of the National Caribbean American Heritage Month in the US, on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 7:00- 8:30pm (EDT). The theme of the roundtable is “Reparatory Justice & Economic Equity for the African & Caribbean Diaspora…If Not Now…When?”

Proud Pelican and triple UWI graduate, Professor Brian Meeks was our latest alumnus on Pelican Talks. After a long career at The UWI, he is currently the Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University. He is also a Poet, political scientist, and prolific writer.

Dr. the Hon. Dennis Lalor OJ

Dr. Lalor is a distinguished Honorary Grad of the UWI and is therefore considered an alumnus. He is the holder of the prestigious Order of Jamaica he is also a Chartered Insurer and is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Company of the West Indies (better known as ICWI) Group Limited and its subsidiaries and now Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta

The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta will take place at the Two Seasons Guest House in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth on that date and we hope all literary aficionados will be there!

Organised in collaboration with the Department of Literatures in English (DLIE) at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies and the Gloria Lyn Memorial Fund (GLMF), the Fiesta is a family-oriented day, immersing participants in the written and spoken word.
