UWI alumnus Akua Leith envisions steelpan ecosystem

A new steelpan manufacturing company will be operational in the fourth quarter of 2021. Musical Instruments of Trinidad and Tobago (MITTCO) is the brainchild of Akua Leith, UWI graduate and the Artistic Director and Conductor of the NationalSteel Symphony Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Musical Arts from The UWI. MITTCO will produce a full range of high-quality steelpans to supply growing demand both locally and internationally.

Tribute to Dr. Keith Archibald

“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again” (Maya Angelou). Dr. Keith Archibald was indeed a great soul. His journey with The University of the West Indies spanned several decades and included inter alia the titles of Lecturer, Warden, alumnus, colleague and friend.

UWI Mona helps the UCI

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, last Thursday, hosted the Tree Planting Ceremony of The United Congregation of Israelites (UCI), where they planted six trees in memory of the 6 million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust during World War II.

The tree planting ceremony was led by Ainsley Henriques, past president of The United Congregation of Israelites, Honorary Consul of Israel in Jamaica and Vice President of the Commonwealth Jewish Council.

Classes of 1970 and 1971 – 50th Anniversary Reunion

We salute the Classes of 1970 and 1971!

A look at how the evening went ....... 

Covid-19 prevented the Class of 70 celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2020 – however we were determined that both the Classes of 1970 and 1971 would be celebrated. So on Saturday, June 12, 2021, the Director of Alumni Relations, Celia Davidson Francis and the Campus Alumni Officers hosted a  virtual celebration for the combined Classes of 70 and 71 so that those graduates could reconnect and celebrate this milestone!

Shanan Smart appointed GM at iCreate

Creative training institute iCreate Limited’s new General Manager is Shanan Smart, who has been with them for two year and has guided it through the coronavirus pandemic. She holda a BSc. degree in Environmental Biology from The UWI – Mona. In her new role, she will further grow the institute and build-out  several partnerships, with for example the HEART/NSTA, the Digital Marketing Institute and Code Fellows.

She is currently enrolled in the UK-based Digital Marketing Institute Sales Academy where she is pursuing a globally accredited certification in digital and social selling.

UWI alumna, Professor Curdella Forbes, awarded the prestigious 2020 Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award

The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation has awarded UWI alumna and Professor at Howard University, Curdella Forbes, the 2020 Legacy Award in the Fiction Category for her book, A Tall History of Sugar (Akashic Books)

A Tall History of Sugar highlights the story of Moshe Fisher, a man who was “born without skin,” so that no one is able to tell what race he belongs to; and Arrienne Christie, his quixotic soul mate who makes it her duty in life to protect Moshe from the social and emotional consequences of his strange appearance.

Successful 2021 Virtual Alumni Retreat

UWIAA Presidents and Contacts, as well as Executive members met with the Director of Alumni Relations and the Campus Alumni Officers on Feb 6, 2021 to discuss the successes and challenges of the past year and look towards increasing engagement in the coming year. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a pivot to the virtual world in order to provide alumni relations programming. Myriad resources and methods were used to successfully engage graduates in line with The UWI’s Triple “A” goals of Access, Alignment and Agility.

UWI STAT Open Campus Footprints Campaign

The UWI Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) Open Campus Corps’ Footprints Day activity in Dominica was successful and an Open Campus student received much needed financial assistance to help as he pursues his undergraduate degree in Secondary Education (Mathematics) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education.

New agriculture chief appointed in Barbados

The first female and youngest ever Chief Agricultural Officer, Ms. Keeley Holder, was appointed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of Barbados on February 1, 2021. She holds a BSc. in Biology and Computer Science from The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Crop Production and Water Management from Galilee College, Israel.

Vareen Vanterpool-Nibbs now Registrar of the High Court- British Virgin Islands

Effective February 15, 2021, UWI Cave Hill alumna and experienced legal professional Mrs. Vareen Vanterpool-Nibbs will be the Registrar of the High Court. She will be responsible for ensuring that the court’s administration operates in an efficient and effective manner and in keeping with the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court’s procedures and rules.

UWIAA Florida Chapter member encourages PPE Donation

UWI Alumnus and UWIAA Florida Chapter Member, Mr. Donat Grant, who is also the President Missions for Health (M4H), was thanked by the School of Dentistry at The UWI Mona for the Missions for Health (M4H) donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as the students are truly appreciative of the organization’s generosity.

Order of Ontario bestowed on UWI Alumna Rosemary Moodie

The Honourable, Senator Rosemary Moodie – Toronto, was appointed to the Order of Ontario by The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario. The province’s highest honour recognizes individuals whose exceptional achievements have a lasting legacy in the province, in Canada and beyond.

Medical Alumni – assisting through the 1948 Society

In 2020, the 1948 Society continues to assist medical students and in 2020 awarded scholarships valued at a total of US$14,000.00

The 1948 Society was launched at the UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) Reunion in Nassau in November 2003. The newly installed UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne endorsed the 1948 Society and made the first donation of US$1,000.00.

UWIAA CHTM 2021 New Year’s Lime

On Saturday January 9, 202, the UWIAA CHTM group kicked off the year with a virtual Lime via Zoom. We got started at 8:30 PM AST Time and continued well into the night finally wrapping up going on 11:00 PM within the same time zone.

Congratulations Class of 2020

Our newest UWI graduates were celebrated in ceremonies across the region from Jan 10 – 15th. The UWI Graduation season also included for the first time the Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda. Six women have made history as the first graduates  from The UWI’s newest campus which was established in 2019. They joined thousands across the regional university graduating this month in ceremonies rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
