UWI Alumni Association Dominica Chapter Report 2019- 2020
The University of the West Indies Alumni Association Dominica Chapter undertook two major activities. On 18th February 2019, the Association in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Roseau hosted this competition amongst 3rd & 4th Form Secondary School students across the island. The topic chosen to speak on was “Should the death penalty be abolished in the Commonwealth of Dominica?” The aim of this competition was to raise awareness about the need to abolish the death penalty in the Commonwealth of Dominica. It was also a part of our activities to recognize and celebrate World Human Rights Day which was held on the 10th of December 2018. The project was also partly funded by the European Union, Greater Caribbean for Life and the World Coalition against the Death Penalty.
Various prizes were provided to all students, especially the winner and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runner ups. Khahil Richards from the St. Mary’s Academy emerged winner of that competition. He received a laptop, trip for two and a plaque from the Association in recognition of his efforts.
The Dominica Alumni Association submitted names for receipt of Pelican Awards Ceremony which was scheduled to take place in October this year in Antigua. Both Dr. Gerald Grell and Reverend William Watty were selected. Reverend Watty was unable to attend the ceremony due to unforeseen challenges, but later received his award.
