The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has been granted institutional accreditation by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), for a period of seven years, the maximum time possible. Well-known Roman Catholic priest Father Clyde Harvey brought the house down at a graduation ceremony at the UWI Sports and Physical Education Centre on Saturday, October 27th, 2012, when the university conferred a Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) Honoris Causa on him. Fr Harvey, a former chaplain of the university, began his acceptance speech by saying that he had agreed to accept the degree only if a mortar board could be found that could fit his large head. He said in all his life, he had found only one cap that fit him properly, and whipping off his too-tight mortar board, he pulled out a red, yellow and green Rastafarian cap, which he placed on his head – to the sound of appreciative laughter and applause from the audience.
Among those present were Pro Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal Prof Clement Sankat, Deputy Principal Professor Rhoda Reddock, Vice Chancellor E Nigel Harris and Chancellor George Alleyne, and the campus’s public orator, Professor Surujpal Teelucksingh, a professor of medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
The other seven honorary graduands this year were Mrs. Maureen Manchouck, Mr. Deokinanan Sharma, Mr. Ronald Harford, Mr. Alloy Lequay, Mr. Michael Mansoor, Mr. Davan Maharaj and Mrs. Therese Mills.
The six graduation ceremonies for this year took place over the course of three days – Thursday, October 25th, Friday, October 26th and Saturday, October 27th – with two ceremonies taking place each day, one at 10am and the other at 4pm.
