“There is a Light”

By Noel Dexter

VERSE ONE:

From Caribbean islands, Guyana and Belize
was born our University of the West Indies.
proud symbol of our oneness, our strength in unity;
with vision clear you came along to shape our destiny,
to follow after knowledge, the truth to seek and find,
to teach us love and justice, to liberate the mind.
today we see you rising, A light out of the West,
that guides the feet of all who seek ,the noblest and the best.

Chorus:

There is a light that is rising from out of the West,
and proud bearers of that light are we,
So we follow those whose work has
brought glory to your name,
making a better world for you and for me.

VERSE TWO:

Now from your noble portals your sons and daughters go,
to face a world of challenges, to conquer every foe.
we’ll work and play together and as time marches on,
we’ll ne’er forget the lesson that “De whole a wi a one”
U.W.I., we praise you, we lift our voice in song.
we let our big drums roll loud, and steel pans ping, ping, pong.
for you have shaped our lives so that we can truly say,
to you we owe our gratitude, a debt we can’t repay.

Chorus:

There is a light that is rising from out of the West,
and proud bearers of that light are we,
so we follow those whose work has
brought glory to your name,
making a better world for you and for me.

Final Verse:

This is our University of the West Indies.

The UWI Regional Endowment Fund has been established to provide an independent source of funding for University programmes and to reduce dependence on government grants, student tuition and direct alumni donations. Over the long term, this fund will increase the strength, stability and independence of the University.

The alumni and staff of the UWI have made significant contributions to the world, below are those who have been recognised by the Nobel Award:

1979

Sir Arthur Lewis (St. Lucia)

He received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1979.

1992

Mr. Derek A. Walcott (St. Lucia)

He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992.

Both Nobel Laureates have close ties to the UWI, Sir Arthur Lewis was Vice Chancellor (1959) and Mr. Derek Walcott is a graduate of the Mona campus.

Nobel Glory also shared in 2007

The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was given to the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Control (IPCC) and former US Vice President Al Gore Jr. As members of the UN's Intergovenmental Panel for Climate Contril and authors of scientific working group reports related to global warming, UWI Professor Anthony Chen, Dr. Leonard Nurse and Professor John Agard also shared in the glory of the 2007 prize. It should be noted that although the prize was awarded based on the collective contributions of thousands of scientists and officials from over one hundred countries, over two decades, the UWI is proud of the contribution made by its personnel towards improving the environment for the betterment of mankind.

UWI GRADUATES WHO HAVE RECEIVED THE PRESTIGIOUS RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Cecil John Rhodes was a British diamond magnate and imperialist. Rhodes' life is part of the history of Southern Africa. The colony of Rhodesia took his name and is today known as the independent state of Zimbabwe. Rhodes name is now remembered principally because of his foundation of the Rhodes Scholarships. He left the greater part of his substantial fortune to establish this scheme in his will.
