The One UWI Responsible Futures Programme (OURFP)
As you embark on your exciting UWI journey, I'm thrilled to introduce you to something truly special: The One UWI Responsible Futures (RF) Programme. This isn't just any programme—it's a transformative experience led by the dynamic UWI STAT Regional Ambassadorial Corps and Guild Presidents, renowned for their passionate climate action and advocacy. You're stepping into a community where sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's a way of life.
So, what does sustainability mean at The UWI? It means ensuring social equity and protecting our planet's life-supporting ecosystems for present and future generations. The United Nations defines it as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Here at UWI, we take this to heart. We want every student, graduate, and stakeholder to have a ‘sustainability mindset,’ ready to make a positive impact on the world.
STUDENT LED

(Students have aptly rebranded the OURFP as "OUR" Futures Programme, underscoring their support and ownership and the belief that this programme is a tangible and effective way for them to collaborate and co-create their futures)
The One UWI Responsible Futures (RF) Programme is student led by the UWI STAT regional Ambassadorial Corps, which includes the Guild Presidents, because of its reputation in climate action & advocacy, as well as its UWISTAT Climate Change Action and Advocacy Network.
RF is an overarching framework to integrate Sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across all curricular and co-curricular activities, operations, infrastructure, procurement, waste management and transportation at the whole institution, phased approach.
What does Sustainability mean at The UWI?
- Sustainability means improving and ensuring social equity for present and future generations and protecting the planet's life supporting eco-systems; and is defined by the United Nations as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
- Sustainability means equipping all students, graduates and UWI stakeholders with a profound understanding of the importance of sustainability in their personal and professional lives, so all graduates leave with a 'sustainability mindset' equipped for the future as national and global citizens.
The OneUWI RF Statement
At The University of the West Indies all stakeholders will adopt a sustainability and resilience mindset, weaving this into the institution's academic, social, and operational fabric; towards a more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable future.
The OneUWI RF Pledge
As a UWI Pelican, I pledge to make sustainability and resilience a priority in my life, livelihood and lifestyle. Understanding that my actions, behaviours, and choices make an impact on society, the environment, and the economy, I will make conscious choices to protect Planet Earth for future generations.
