As a UWI Mona graduate student within the Faculty of Science & Technology from the Department of Life Sciences, I recently embarked on a profound journey to the University of Glasgow in Scotland. I arrived in Glasgow, filled with anticipation. The city welcomed us with its unique blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy. Checking into the hotel, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness about the days ahead.

Working in Drama and Education for over forty years, Brian S. Heap, Senior Lecturer, Staff Tutor in Drama and Head of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica passed away on Sunday March 24, 2024. A great friend of the UWI Museum as he was to so many others.

A PIONEER IN JAMAICA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM

Dr June (Mitchelmore) Hassall – wonderful mother, caring wife, educator extraordinaire, artist and writer – died in England on September 23, 2023, and her funeral was held on November 13, 2023. To honour her life and work in Jamaica, a memorial service will be held at the UWI, Mona Chapel on February 21, from 11:30 am to 2 pm.

WORLD WAR II CAMPS IN JAMAICA???

I was fascinated the first time I heard of Gibraltar Camp, a British Colonial Office facility established as a haven for civilian evacuees from the British Mediterranean fortress of Gibraltar, during World War II. Mostly women and children were housed in wooden barracks buildings across acres of former sugar land at Mona, on the outskirts of Kingston. Later, Jewish and other wartime refugees also lived there, on a lower level.
