1. PURPOSE & DESCRIPTION OF SCHOLARSHIP
The Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award is established to foster international identity with, and collaboration in, the field of Natural Products Chemistry and to facilitate career development, support in the form of a grant will be awarded to graduate student in the Department of Chemistry towards travel and conference expenses to attend relevant overseas conference/meeting in order to make an oral presentation of their research in Natural Products.
 
2. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Graduate student researchers in the field of Natural Products Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at The UWI, Mona Campus are eligible to apply.
 
A.Final Report

  • Every recipient of the Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award is required to submit a copy of the actual oral presentation made at the international conference, as well as a brief report (100-600 words) of the benefits realised by attending the conference and making the oral presentation. The report should be submitted within one month after making the presentation.
  • A copy of the report will be sent to the Chan family.

 
B.Intellectual Property

  • All intellectual property emanating from the efforts leading to The W. R. Chan Award of Excellence will be held by The University of the West Indies, according to the University's Intellectual Property Policy, unless otherwise negotiated.

 
C. Acknowledgment and Publicity

  • All recipients of The Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award are required to acknowledge receipt of support from Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award.

 
D. Inactive The Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award

  • An Award will be regarded as inactive if for some reason, attendance to the international conference has been postponed for more than three months.
  • In the event that the Award remains in a state of inactivity for more than six months the Research Awards Committee will terminate the grant

 
E. Termination/Withdrawal of Award

  • The Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award may be terminated or withdrawn if recipient’s fail to make the presentation of their research work to the designated international conference for six months after receiving the award.
     

3. VALUE OF AWARD

  1. Each successful recipient will obtain a maximum of US$1,000 towards the costs for registration, airfare, and accommodation associated with the conference.

  1. AWARD APPLICATION REQUIREMENT

       All applications shall be accompanied by the following documents:

  1. Transcript from The UWI covering at least Year 1 of your programme in the field of Natural Products Chemistry
  2. Candidate should show support documentation that they have been accepted to attend a relevant international conference with an approved oral presentation in a relevant international conference. Applicants should also show documentation that they have made the oral presentation to a Research Awards Committee in a seminar setting, before the award is made.

 
7. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION & SELECTION PROCESS
Criteria for Selection
In the selection process, priority will be given to:

  1. Applications, submitted by any graduate students of the Department of Chemistry at Mona, in the field of Natural Products Chemistry.
  2. Applications from such researchers who have satisfactorily completed at least one year of their natural products research programme.
  3. Applications from natural products researchers who wish to make an approved oral presentation in a relevant international conference.
  4. Applications from natural products researchers who have made the oral presentation to a Research Awards Committee in a seminar setting, before the award is made.

 
Selection Process

  1. Applications, submitted in writing to the Head, Department of Chemistry, by graduate students of the Department at Mona, in the field of Natural Products Chemistry
  2. Applications are considered by the Research Awards Committee.
  3. Having been vetted by the Research Awards Committee to ensure compliance with the selection criteria, applications are reviewed, evaluated and assessed by the Research Awards Committee;
  4. The Research Awards Committee will consist of members of the Department of Chemistry. The Chan Family reserves the right to designate an external member to the Research Awards Committee.
  5. In a year in which there are no worthy oral presentations by graduate researchers in natural products chemistry, no award will be made for that year. The Research Awards Committee will make an announcement to that effect.

  1. Submit the completed application form with all the other relevant documents to the School for Graduate Studies and Research, Regional Headquarters via email at gsr@uwi.edu, on/before June 30, 2025, under the captioned subject The Wilfred R. Chan International Conference Travel Award 2025.
