Our History
An audit function initially operated as a section within the Bursary of the Cave Hill, Mona and St Augustine campuses reporting to the Campus Bursars. Arising out of the Chancellor's Commission on Governance 1994, a separate and independent internal audit function was established in 1996. The audit function was renamed the Management Audit Department and established with the appointment of a University Audit Committee, three Campus Audit Committees and the office of the University Management Auditor. The independence of the internal audit function and the Audit Committees was established by the University Ordinance 11 and 12.
The department commenced with 8 regional staff members and an interim University Management Auditor, Neil Hunter, who was also the consultant responsible for establishment of the framework for the operations of the department. Mr. Hunter was succeeded by Mrs. Elaine Robinson, who was appointed to the position of University Management Auditor.
In April 2023 the Council approved the change of name for the department to The UWI Audit and Advisory Services (UWI Audit) to emphasize the independence of the department as well as the breadth of services offered. The department currently has 25 staff providing regional coverage for the University and reports directly to 5 Campus Audit Committees and the University Audit Committee.
