What We Do

SOLUTIONS FOR MEDICINE:

From its inception, UWI SODECO has worked closely with the Faculty of Medical Sciences in order to further research in the faculty.

First is an accelerated programme to identify and train research leaders in Departments. The Faculty has agreed to reallocate time and modify evaluation criteria appropriately to allow Research Leaders 80% time to focus on research so as to serve as the engines within their departments for research. Clinical and Teaching Faculty will thus have a Departmental focal point for research in which they can participate without carrying the full burden of clinical/teaching simultaneously with their research. The first three candidates have been enrolled in a tightly run PhD programme embedded in the UWI SODECO research programme, with a three-four year graduation timeline.

SOLUTIONS FOR SOCIETY (SFS):

An exemplar project was the successful project in 2012 developing best practice methods to institute mobile phone based financial transactions working in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Bank of Jamaica, Telecoms and Banks.

Between 2017 and 2018 UWI SODECO convened senior members of Government and Opposition, the Private Sector, Religion, The Royal Society, and the University of the West Indies to explore approaches to large problems affecting Jamaica and strategic approaches to solving these.

Two projects materialized out of these consultations; the Royal Society UWI Collaboration to use science to more effectively address climate change, developmental biology and the interaction of the two.
