SOLUTIONS FOR SOCIETY (SFS)
UWI SODECO Solutions for Society has a major focus on solving problems that affect the socio-economic environment of Jamaica.
An exemplar project was the successful project in 2012 developing best practice methods to institute mobile phone based financial transactions working in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Bank of Jamaica, Telecoms and Banks.
Between 2017 and 2018 UWI SODECO convened senior members of Government and Opposition, the Private Sector, Religion, The Royal Society, and the University of the West Indies to explore approaches to large problems affecting Jamaica and strategic approaches to solving these.
Two projects materialized out of these consultations; the Royal Society UWI Collaboration to use science to more effectively address climate change, developmental biology and the interaction of the two.
The second area of focus identified from these consultations was the need for increased research to advance adaptation and mitigation of the effects of climate change in Jamaica and Caribbean.
Thus, UWI SODECO SFS since 2018, begun to address another important problem within the area of adaptation and resilience to climate change, mangrove restoration.
