CEM Graduate Degree Programmes

The programme offered by the Centre is a Masters degree in Natural Resourc Management (NRM) in three M.Sc. Degree streams along with three Diploma streams - Integrated Urban and Rural Environmental Management (IUREM); Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems (MaTE).

The primary objective of the M.Sc. in Integrated Urban and Rural Environmental Management is to contribute to an integrated approach to environmental and natural resource management in the Caribbean region through professional training.

The M.Sc. in Disaster Risk Management is delivered in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC). It provides training in disaster management incorporating various disciplines, focusing on the development of policy to address disaster risk management. The programme is currently undergoing review.

The M.Sc. in Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems is a merger of the Aquatic Sciences and Tropical Ecosystem Assessment and Management M.Sc. programmes, and is delivered in collaboration with the Department of Life Sciences. The programme investigates selected aspects of the biodiversity associated with Jamaican aquatic and terrestrial environments, with a greater emphasis on their management, conservation and sustainable use.

MSc. Natural Resource Management (NRM)

There are three M.Sc. Degree and Diploma streams in the NRM:

  • Integrated Urban and Rural Environmental Management (IUREM) – The M.Sc. in IUREM  is designed to train professionals to contribute to an integrated approach  to environmental and natural resources management in the Caribbean region
  • Disaster Risk Management (DRM) - The M.Sc. in DRM (currently under review) is designed to train disaster management experts from different disciplines to develop policy to address regional disaster management.
  • Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems  (MaTE) -  The M.Sc. in MaTE is a merger of the Aquatic Sciences and Tropical Ecosystem Assessment and Management M.Sc. programmes. This programme is coordinated by the Department of Life Sciences. It investigates selected aspects of the biodiversity associated with Jamaican aquatic and terrestrial environment, with emphasis on their management, conservation and sustainable use.

Courses

M.Sc. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The M.Sc. degree consists of a common core of six courses:

  • Socioecology and Natural Resource Management,
  • Research Methods and Project Management,
  • Environmental Impact Assessment,
  • Principles of Geoinformatics,
  • Management and Analysis of Environmental Data and
  • Environmental Law and Multilateral Agreements.

Additionally, there are specific specialization courses for each stream and a major Research Project. This core is done by all students in the M.Sc. Natural Resource Management streams and is also done by students in the M.Phil. and PhD Environmental Management programmes.

 

M.Sc.PROGRAMME DURATION AND DELIVERY

The M.Sc. programmes have a duration of two years (twenty four months, part-time) inclusive of field work for completion of the major Research project. The programme consists of two semesters and a summer: Semester 1 (September to December), Semester 2 (January to April) and a Summer Term (May to July), for each of the two years. Students in the MaTE stream who opt for the Environmental Research project (BIOL 6550) are allowed additional time to complete the project.

The mode of delivery is by face-to- face, lectures and labs/workshops/seminars. Classes will be held on two weekday evenings and on Saturdays. Field trips may occasionally require weekday scheduling.

 

Entry Requirements

For the M.Sc. IUREM and DRM – A BSc. Honours degree in earth sciences, geography, geology, environmental science, social sciences or a relevant or analogous area from a recognized university.

For the M. Sc. MaTE – A BSc. Honours degree in biological sciences from a recognized university.

Supporting Documents

(1) Only original copies of supporting document is accepted.  These are to be uploaded to your application online, to the Assistant Registrar, Office of Graduate Studies and Research, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, before the deadline.

(2) Although you may upload copies of your certificates, if you are not a graduate of the UWI, you MUST request that your degree granting institution forward your Official Transcript, directly to The Assistant Registrar, Office of Graduate Studies and Research, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Kingston 7, Jamaica W.I. before the deadline.

Note: All supporting documents are needed for verification and the processing of an application. Applications without relevant documents will not be considered.

 

Programme Cost

The cost of the M.Sc. NRM for the current academic year is ten thousand U.S dollars (US$10,000.00) or the Jamaican equivalent, inclusive of miscellaneous fees. This is subject to review.
