The overall project lead investigator is Professor Boyd Metzger of Northwestern University, Chicago.
The HAPO study was funded through the NIH (NIDDK, NIH: US $239,588).
Based on studies conducted from 2002 on 25,505 pregnant women and their infants in 15 centres distributed across the globe, the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) Study has made significant contributions to our understanding of the impact of degree of glycemia in pregnancy on maternal and infant outcomes. A recently published manuscript has now used study findings to establish criteria for gestational diabetes based on robust scientific data for the first time (Diabetes Care 2010; 33:676-82).
