Frequently Asked Questions (STAFF)

  1. From when does the Postgraduate GPA System take effect?

All new, incoming students in pursuit of postgraduate certificate and diplomas as well as masters and professional doctorates, in taught programmes only will be assessed under the Postgraduate GPA System from the start of the 2021/2022 academic year.

  1. If MPhil and PhD students pursue courses from programmes that are assessed under the GPA grading scheme, how will this impact their degrees?

No, this will not impact their degrees, as MPhil and PhD students are not assessed by the GPA.

  1. In cases where both “old” and “new” students exist in the same course, would the Banner system automatically identify the difference?

Yes, students will be registered in separate Course Registration Numbers (CRNs) in order to identify them. Based on the configuration agreed to where there will be two sections of the same course (one CRN for the GPA students and another for Non-GPA students), students will register in the relevant section.

  1. When uploading marks at the end of the semester, will examiners have to upload twice for each course because of students registered under the GPA system and students not under the GPA system having different Course Reference Numbers?

Yes, each Course Reference Number (CRN) must be graded separately as they will have the required grade scales attached.  Examiners are required to upload or enter grades for each CRN for each course.

  1. Will any manual calculations be required by examiners for mark input for PG GPA in the Banner system?

No, this will be automated

  1. Does F1, F2, F3 apply for PG GPA?

Yes, this is due to the fact that the postgraduate GPA system was aligned to the undergraduate system already in existence at The UWI.

  1. We just got approvals for blended MSc programmes. Will we have to ask for an additional approval to include this new GPA system?

No, all programmes, unless an exemption is applied to them will automatically be assessed on the GPA grading scheme.

  1. Is it required to send proposals of old programmes amending this revised GPA for approval of GS&R?

No. All programmes, unless an exemption is applied to them will automatically be assessed on the GPA grading scheme.

  1. Given that the project component accounts for 6 - 15 credits in taught Masters programmes while other courses are worth 3-4 credits, how will this disparity be taken into account in the proposed GPA system since the project should be more heavily weighted in the calculation of the final GPA?

Research projects with heavier credit weightings will have greater impact on the final GPA.
