Sir Sidney Launcelot Martin

SIR SIDNEY MARTIN

 

 

Sir Sidney Martin won the Jamaica Scholarship in 1937 with honours in Chemistry.  He joined the University a year after its inauguration in 1949 as a Lecturer in Physical Chemistry. 

The University Chancellor in 1985 said of Sir Sidney, “that he laid the foundation for the development of Physical Chemistry at the UWI.  He was appointed to act as University Registrar from 1961-1964, after which he became the Acting Principal of the fledgling College of Arts and Sciences in Barbados for two years.  He was confirmed in the post in 1966, and also named as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

In recognition of his many services he was knighted by the Queen in 1979, and the UWI conferred on him the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) in 1984 for his outstanding Public Service, his contribution as a University Administrator to the Development of The UWI in general and the Cave Hill Campus in particular.

Sir Sidney retired from the UWI in 1966.
