About Us
The Centre for Reparation Research (CRR) is the first and at the moment the only Centre dedicated to reparatory research and advocacy in the world, located within academia. The Caribbean has a historical legacy that is unlike anywhere else in the world, where for hundreds of years African people were forcibly transported and enslaved on tobacco, sugar and cotton plantations without any remuneration. When slavery was outlawed in 1838 indentured labourers were transported to the Caribbean from Asia, namely China and India to continue the work of the former enslaved Africans, and although they were somewhat compensated, the whole matter of indentureship was farcical. Therefore, the non- compensation for hundreds of years of African labour forms the grounds on which reparatory justice is advocated for Caribbean descendants of enslavement and farcical indentureship.
