Hurricane Andrew 1992

Category 5 storm caused damage of 250 million USD to Bahamas. One of the worst hurricanes to hit the islands in 60 years, 4 persons killed, 1700 persons left homeless of the 250,000-total population. 2 % of tourism properties (rooms, cottages and apartments) affected by physical devastation. Five schools and 800 homes destroyed. Telecommunications, transport infrastructure, water and airport and port severely damaged. Sanitation and Nassau and Freeport were untouched except for minor damage from winds and rain, as were Abacos, the Exumas, Andros Islands and San Salvador.

Hurricane Inez 1966

Moved into Bahamas on October 2 to the morning of the 3rd with Maximum winds of 85 mph. Nearly 15 inches of rain was recorded from October 204. As a result of the hurricane a tornado was spawned that killed a 15 months old child and injured 3 others. As Inez stalled just east of the Bimini Islands high tides caused flooding in Nassau where damaged occurred and 4 more lives lost.

Hurricane Donna 1960

Islands in the South East of Bahamas experienced the fury of Donna which packed winds of 150 mph. The eye passed over and near to Acklins Island, Fortune Island and Ragged Island and Mayaguana. No deaths but in many islands only a few of the substantial buildings were left standing. In Mayaguana the island experienced hurricane force winds for 13 hours. Most of the islands in the West Bahamas did not experience extensive damage.
