Franchises and Articulations

Partnering to Increase Regional Access through Franchises and Articulations

The UWI has a proven track-record of commitment to regional development. This is demonstrated through human resource development, research, advisory services to governments and the private sector and strategic linkages with other institutions in the region and beyond. These institutional links include articulation agreements and the franchising of The UWI’s programmes to colleges in the region. Through articulation agreements The UWI recognises the Associate Degrees of partner tertiary level institutions either for normal matriculation into The UWI or for advanced placement within a relevant bachelor’s degree at The UWI. Franchise arrangements allow for delivery of UWI programmes by partner tertiary level institutions.

Articulation & Franchise FAQs

Articulation

What is an articulation agreement?

An articulation agreement between The UWI and a partner tertiary level institution allows holders of degrees from the partner institution to access advanced placement within The UWI system by recognition of Associate Degree programmes for matriculation.

Why articulation agreements are valuable?

Across the region, several tertiary level institutions have developed Associate degree programmes. As the region’s premier university, The UWI recognises its responsibility for widening access to tertiary education and as such is an active partner in creating a pathway for students holding these degrees to matriculate into The UWI and complete bachelor degree qualifications.

Who is responsible for articulation agreements?

The UWI works with colleges as well as organisations such as the Association of Caribbean Tertiary Institutions (ACTI) and the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ) to develop guidelines and standards for associate degrees and promote regional collaboration in programme planning and articulation among the colleges and universities in the region.

How do I request an articulation agreement with The UWI?

Tertiary level institutions interested in articulation arrangements with The UWI should submit the request with programme information to the Office of Global Affairs. Programme information should include:

  • Admission requirements
  • Associate degree regulations
  • Standard programme duration
  • Maximum period for programme candidacy
  • Credit requirements with definition of a credit hour
  • Assessment procedures
  • Grading system
  • System for computing grade point average
  • List of courses and electives for Associate Degree
  • List of majors for specific Associate Degree
What is involved in the articulation process?

Once an articulation request is submitted, a course content or curriculum review is undertaken to assess the suitability of a programme for articulation. If the programme is not recommended, the tertiary level is informed and advised on how to improve alignment with The UWI programme in consideration of a resubmission. If approved for proceeding, the requesting tertiary level institution is informed and a quality evaluation is undertaken.

Franchising

What is a Franchise Agreement?

A franchise agreement is established when a fully autonomous and independent TLI, by mutual agreement, assumes responsibility for the delivery of a UWI programme. The UWI however retains responsibility for examination, award/certification and quality assurance.

Why is Franchising Valuable?

Franchising of UWI programmes widens access to tertiary education, promotes cost savings to students and governments, contributes to regional tertiary capacity building as well as generally strengthens the regional tertiary education network.

How can a TLI apply to deliver a UWI Programme under a Franchise Agreement?

Enquiries about delivering a UWI programme via franchise agreement should be initiated at least 18 months before the desired start of programme delivery. These should be submitted in writing to The Office of Global Affairs.
