10DEGREE REQUIREMENTS BASED ON CALCULATED GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)

The University’s requirements of a minimum GPA for Bachelor's degrees has changed from 1.0 to 2.0. Undergraduate students who matriculate to the University in August 2014 and after must earn a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in their major/minor/certificate/diploma requirements. Continuing undergraduate students as of the 2014/2015 academic year must also earn a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate. Note that individual department, college, school or programme requirements may exceed this minimum. All other existing requirements, both faculty and university, that are based on any calculated GPA will continue under the 2014/2015 policy.


11NEW CLASS OF DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The change in the minimum Degree GPA from 1.0 to 2.0 also necessitates a change in the minimum class of degree bands. Undergraduate degrees awarded by the University (except where otherwise specified) are as follows:

Pass 2.00 – 2.49


The degree of Bachelor of Medical Sciences shall be classified as follows:

Pass 2.00 – 3.29


The degrees of MBBS, DDS, and DVM (prior to 2011/2012) shall be classified as follows:

12SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND PROGRESSION

Except where otherwise prescribed in Faculty Regulations, a student whose GPA for a given semester is less than 2.00 shall be deemed to be performing unsatisfactorily, and shall be placed on warning. A student on warning whose GPA for the succeeding semester is less than 2.0, will be required to withdraw (RTW). However, a student may be reinstated if his/her GPA improves beyond 2.0 in the second semester by credits obtained in Summer School.

Except for the students in the Faculty of Engineering, students who entered a programme prior to the academic year 2014/2015 and who have a GPA of less than 2.00 may be given leave by their Faculty to continue into the academic year 2014/2015.
