Hurricane Janet 1955

The eye of Hurricane Janet passed just south of the island of Barbados on September 22nd. Maximum winds were estimated at 110 to 120 mph dropping off very rapidly 20 miles out from the edge to the eye. In a short space of time all the island’s communications, electric and telephone services, were at a standstill, and transportation services stopped since all the major roads were blocked by trees and debris.

1831 Barbados -Louisiana Hurricane

Category 4 hurricane, killing 1500 people, most persons died because of the storm surge or crushed under collapsed buildings. Barbados was in ruins after the hurricane. No house in the island escaped the impact of storm being either torn down of their foundations or being unroofed, leaving many families without shelter

Destructive to lives and property in every corner of the island. The Government House-unroofed and nearly destroyed. Many ships were driven on shore, these ship wrecks on the beach mingled with the ruins of the bay.
