The Caribbean Institute for Health Research (CAIHR) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a two-day symposium on June 3–4, 2025, hosted at The University of the West Indies’ Regional Headquarters. The event brought together academics, policymakers, institutional partners, and early-career researchers from across the region. Themed “Impacting Health in the Caribbean and Beyond”, the symposium reflected on CAIHR’s 25-year journey, its impact on health and policy, explored new areas of research, and outlined strategies for future growth and sustainability in light of changing regional and global trends.

Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Conference 2025

CAIHR presented CARPHA with a framed early publication from Professor John Waterlow who was a founding member of CARPHA’s predecessor, the Standing Advisory Committee for Medical Research. Read more

The House That John Built

On June 4, 2025, CAIHR opened its museum, The House that John Built, at the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit (TMRU), so named after the book on the work of the Unit from 1956-2006. Read more

Time Capsule Ceremony

As part of CAIHR’s 25th Anniversary a Time Capsule was planted in TMRU’s inner garden containing submissions from the Units on what they would like future staff to know about us in 25 years when the capsule is opened. Read more

Tribute: Graham Sergeant

Professor Graham Serjeant, the Father of Sickle Cell Disease research in Jamaica and indeed a global leader in the field passed away on March 25, 2025. Read more

The Child Development Research Group (CDRG) response to the Covid-19 pandemic: Creating and evaluating remote services for young children

The Covid-19 pandemic led to the suspension of many in-person services. Early in the pandemic there was an urgent call for ways to continue services for families with young children (1). The Child Development Research Group’s Reach Up and Irie teams responded to this challenge with innovations to support remote delivery of services and training.
