The UWI SALISES Launches Groundbreaking National Study on Artificial Intelligence in Kingston, Jamaica
The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The UWI, Mona Campus is proud to announce the launch of a National Study on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Jamaica. This study, titled AI Insights: Understanding Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Artificial Intelligence in Jamaica, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of AI perceptions across various segments of Jamaican society, including youth, business leaders, policymakers, and the general public. The study will evaluate familiarity with AI concepts, awareness of AI and its uses, the public's level of trust and confidence in AI technologies, concerns about AI, AI Skills, the benefits of AI, AI and the digital divide and the current use of AI tools across industries and personal contexts. The findings will help to shape future educational initiatives, inform policy recommendations, and guide ethical AI adoption strategies to benefit Jamaica’s development.
Professor Lloyd Waller, the Principal Investigator and Director of SALISES, Mona emphasized the study's importance: “At SALISES, we recognize the growing use of AI across industries and in everyday life globally, as well as the lack of empirical research to better understand this phenomenon. This study is therefore designed to uncover how Jamaicans understand, perceive, and interact with AI, offering vital insights to assist the government in planning Jamaica’s social and economic future. The study will also be valuable to businesses and civil society, many of which are reevaluating their operations and processes due to the rise of AI. By identifying knowledge gaps and attitudes toward AI, we aim to equip Jamaica with the data needed to harness AI’s potential in ways that align with our national priorities and aspirations.”
The comprehensive AI Insights study will be the first of its kind in the Caribbean, positioning Jamaica as a regional leader in preparing for a future increasingly influenced by digital innovation. The results are expected to offer actionable insights for stakeholders across public and private sectors and will be pivotal in guiding Jamaica toward a sustainable and inclusive AI-driven future.
