Message from Dr. Francis O. Severin, Pro Vice-Chancellor & Principal The Global Campus

The Caribbean, a Region known for its rich blend of cultures, cuisines, stunning beaches, mountains, lush rainforests, and marine life, is under threat from the adverse effects of climate change. Rising sea levels, soaring temperatures, and rampant deforestation have made the Caribbean vulnerable to severe weather events and natural disasters. The urgency of this situation demands a collective shift towards sustainable practices, the development of resilient communities, and the active participation in the global climate change discussion. This call to action extends not only to the leaders of governments and educational institutions, but also to individuals worldwide who envision a peaceful and prosperous life, urging them to join hands in preserving the Caribbean’s beauty, biodiversity and the sustainability of our Regionís economies.

Motivated by its mission to advance learning, create knowledge, and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean, The University of the West Indies has taken a significant step in addressing the critical issue of climate change through the establishment of The Global Institute for Climate Smart and Resilient Development (GICSRD). The Global Campus is committed to addressing the issues related to climate action and we are pleased to work with the GICSRD to develop this virtual climate justice and climate education space, and therefore collaborating with the Open Society Foundations (OSF) is a source of pride for us.

Partnerships and relationships not only strengthen our institution but also play a pivotal role in achieving The University of the West Indies’ strategic goal of increased alignment. The OSF/UWI collaboration is timely as it creates a virtual space which serves as a repository for resources and information that are concerned with Agenda 2030 and elevates climate justice issues specifically. As we continue to share knowledge and take action, we demonstrate that we are at the forefront of the climate crisis, and The UWI and the Global Campus in particular, are appreciative to the OSF for the support provided to this very important mission. Together, we will safeguard the region’s future for generations to come.
