Future-Proofing: One Step Backward, Two Steps Forward
SOUTH AFRICA honours UWI
A historic partnership was forged in 2024 as The UWI signed a transformative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with South Africa’s North-West University. Professor Sir Hilary Beckles described the moment as both “historic and emotional,” reflecting the deep and enduring ties between the Caribbean and South Africa. Vice-Chancellor Beckles emphasised the historical solidarity shared by the Caribbean and South Africa, recalling, “we were in the trenches with you in the fight against Apartheid.” He highlighted the parallel structures of both universities— multi-campus institutions with comparable student populations and a shared dedication to academic excellence and international accreditation. The MOU sets the stage for a robust framework of collaboration, including student and faculty exchanges, capacity building, joint research, publications, seminars, conferences, and the co- development of courses and public lectures. Professor Bismark Tyobeka, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of North-West University, expressed pride in aligning with The UWI, noting both institutions’ aspirations to achieve world-class status and global recognition. North-West University, established in 2004 through the merger of historically black and white institutions, stands as a symbol of reconciliation and nation-building in post- Apartheid South Africa.
