Dr. Lashley is a Senior Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. He joined the Institute in 2000 and his duties involve conducting independent research, participation in external research projects SALISES is contracted to conduct, and teaching and supervision of post-graduate students at the Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine campuses of The UWI. To date he has supervised 8 students to successful completion of their doctorates, either as main supervisor or part of a supervisory team.

Since 2006, Dr. Lashley has been the SALISES coordinator for external projects, and since 2004 has contributed to over 20 such projects, several as project manager and report author.

Dr. Lashley’s personal research agenda is focused on sustainable socio-economic development, with a particular interest in entrepreneurship, enterprise development, microfinancial services, poverty alleviation, and related cross-cutting issues of gender, youth and other vulnerable groups. His research work has been published both regionally and internationally.

His most recent publications include: a 2019 co-authored book with Dr. Corin Bailey and Professor Christine Barrow titled Rethinking Poverty: Assets, Social Exclusion, Resilience and Human Rights in Barbados published by UWI Press; a 2018 co-edited special issue of the journal Entrepreneurship and Regional Development entitled Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in the Caribbean with Dr. Indianna Minto-Coy (UWI, Mona) and Professor David Storey (University of Sussex, UK); an article in the special issue titled Barriers to Enterprise Development in the Caribbean with Professor Stephen Drinkwater (University of Roehampton, UK) and Dr. Catherine Robinson (University of Kent, UK); and a 2016 book co-authored with Dr. Lawrence Nicholson (UWI, Mona) titled Understanding the Caribbean Enterprise: Insights from MSMEs and Family Owned Businesses, published by Palgrave Macmillan UK. The book received the UWI (Mona) Principal’s Award for Best Research Publication (Faculty of Social Sciences) in 2016. Other awards include: the 2016 Research Team Award for Best Applied Research from the School for Graduate Studies and Research, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados for the Caribbean Development Bank report Youth are the Future: The Imperative of Youth Employment for Sustainable Development; the 2014 Research Team Award from the School for Graduate Studies and Research, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados for research undertaken in relation to the Compete Caribbean- Private Sector Development Strategies for six OECS Countries; the 2009 Barbados Small Business Association Community Award (Individual) for research in the area of enterprise development; and the 2007 National Small Business Award for Excellence in Small Business Research (2006) from the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs of the Government of Barbados.

2015: ‘Barbados Habitat III National Report for the United Nations Global Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development 2016’. The report focuses on the new challenges and emerging trends in relation to sustainable urban settlements and urban development in Barbados. 2012: Barbados Country Assessment of Living Conditions for the Government of Barbados, funded by the Caribbean Development Bank. The project output consisted of six (6) reports: Main Overview Report; Macro Social and Economic Report; Survey of Living Conditions; Participatory Poverty Assessment for Vulnerable Groups; Participatory Poverty Assessment for Communities; Analysis of Livelihood-Related Institutions. Dr. Lashley’s primary responsibility was for the Survey of Living Conditions (SLC), a national survey of 3,000 households and 6,000 individuals. Specific activities for the SLC involved detailing sampling methodology, construction of household and individual survey instruments in conjunction with the National Assessment Team, data analysis, report writing, and dissemination of results. Other project members included: Downes, A.S., Barrow, C. B., Bailey, C, and Ellis, P. Project Role: Project Manager for the National Survey of Living Conditions (SLC), author of SLC Report and editorial assistance for the other six report volumes, including the summary report titled Human Development Challenges in a Global Crisis: Addressing Growth and Social Inclusion.
