Dr. Bephyer Parey is a Research Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), St. Augustine Campus. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Policy from The UWI in June 2019 and joined the SALISES faculty shortly thereafter in August 2019.
With a strong quantitative foundation, Dr. Parey holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Statistics from The UWI. As a lecturer, she has brought her expertise to the graduate classroom, teaching courses such as Techniques of Applied Social Statistical Analysis and Research Design and Management at SALISES. Additionally, she has taught Introduction to Mathematics, Introduction to Statistics, and Engineering Statistics at The UWI. In recognition of her excellence in teaching, she was awarded the UWI/Guardian Group Premium Teaching Award in 2022, followed by a Fellowship at Advance Higher Education in 2023. Her commitment to high-quality instruction is further solidified by her completion of the Certificate in University Teaching and Learning at The UWI.
Beyond her quantitative prowess, Dr. Parey has developed expertise in qualitative and mixed-methods research through various training programs, allowing her to adopt a holistic approach to social policy analysis. Her research agenda is primarily focused on disability studies and multidimensional poverty, with an emphasis on education, employment, social care, and wellbeing. She is committed to developing policy recommendations that facilitate the comprehensive inclusion of persons with disabilities throughout their lifecourse. As Chair of the Disability Studies Research Cluster at SALISES, she has played a pivotal role in fostering institutional collaborations, including leading the implementation of a memorandum of understanding between The UWI and the Equal Opportunity Commission of Trinidad and Tobago. Under her leadership, the Cluster spearheaded a public awareness initiative showcasing the significant contributions of persons with disabilities to Trinidad and Tobago society, challenging and reshaping societal perceptions of disability.
An accomplished scholar, Dr. Parey has contributed to numerous international publications and has presented her research at over forty academic conferences and symposia across the Caribbean, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe (including Austria, Denmark, and Ireland), and South Africa. She is also deeply engaged in institutional service, contributing to committees such as the Teaching and Learning Working Group for the Continuing Institutional Accreditation Self-Study Report and the Faculty of Social Sciences Marketing and Outreach Committee at The UWI, St. Augustine. Additionally, she serves as Academic Coordinator of the MSc in Development Statistics at SALISES, St. Augustine, and Coordinator of the Social Development Policy Concentration of the MSc in Development Studies at SALISES, Mona. As a supervisor of MSc and MPhil/PhD students, she is dedicated to mentoring and guiding the next generation of scholars in their academic and research pursuits.
