Hurricane Jose 1999 Deaths: 1 Damage: Storm which was a category 2 with winds of 160 km caused widespread damage in both Islands. Flooding of major roads occurred. Initial assessments estimated 2000 persons were severely affected and evacuated their homes. 18 persons were hospitalized and 500 left homeless. 815 homes suffered roof loss and damage. The telephone and electricity service was also disrupted, with 50% of the telephones out of service and 90% of the country without electricity. Significant amount of debris generated as a result of storm. 2 shelters were left damaged Antigua and Barbuda
Hurricane Georges 1998 Deaths: 2 Injured: 25 Homeless: 2000 Impact : Extensive Damage: 3 schools were damaged (1 extensively). Damage was mainly to roofs. The All Saints Police Station was also damaged. It is estimated that 10-20% of the housing sector has been adversely affected. Disruption of Electricity and telephone services as a number of electric and telephone poles fell during the passage of the hurricane. Several roads have also been blocked by trees.
