This category 1 hurricane caused minimal damage to housing but caused considerable loss of food crops and livestock leading to loss of food crops and livestock. Between 800-1000 animals were destroyed.

125mph winds left a path of destruction in Anguilla. Some 500 houses were destroyed leading to over 1000 persons being left homeless, the hurricane wiped out the island’s entire merchant fleet. Following the hurricane, locals had to depend heavily for several weeks on relief supplies of clothing, food and medicine from other countries. The country took several years to recover from the hurricane, but it led to a revolution in building technology in the island with many of the board structures being replaced by concrete structures

This hurricane which occurred in January caught the people of Anguilla off guard; Approximately 626 houses were damaged or completely destroyed. A total of 9 Government buildings were damaged including the Prison, Post Office and Treasury. Agriculture was affected with 50 % of the peas crop and 20 % of the corn crop being wiped out. The shipping sector was extensively damaged since boat owners had no time to secure their vessels.
