Hurricane Alice 1954

This hurricane which occurred in January caught the people of Anguilla off guard; Approximately 626 houses were damaged or completely destroyed. A total of 9 Government buildings were damaged including the Prison, Post Office and Treasury. Agriculture was affected with 50 % of the peas crop and 20 % of the corn crop being wiped out. The shipping sector was extensively damaged since boat owners had no time to secure their vessels.
