  • 1843 Earthquake

    On the 8th Feb 1843 an earthquake occurred affecting Nevis – Charlestown Court House to the ground. Bath house much damaged. Custom House partly down and all the Mills in the island more or less injured, nearly the whole of the town destroyed, most of the wood built houses are left standing, all the stone buildings are so injured that they must be taken down and rebuilt, estimated damage at £50,000 only 2 Mills on the island that can be worked.

    No reports of deaths/missing persons

    Downed poles and trees
    Disruption of electricity supply

    Nevis

    Power went out.
    Twelve shelters were opened with 33 persons housed
    Several persons had to be evacuated due to roofs of homes being blown off.

    EMDAT (2018) cited 20,000,000 USD in damage .

  • Hurricane Earl 2010

    On Monday, August 30 Hurricane Earl a Category 2 storm passed approximately 73 miles north of St. Kitts-Nevis. The Meteorological Office at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport recorded wind gusts of 45 mph and 3.82 inches of rainfall between 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 2:00 p.m. Monday. Carl Herbert, National Disaster Coordinator at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said he felt the minimal impact on property was largely due to preparedness efforts of citizens.“People heeded the storm warnings and advice given about prepared for Hurricane Earl, and it showed.
