HONOURS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

Passing of Giants

The UWI and the Caribbean region mourned giants whose lives shaped the heart and future of the region. Sir Keith Hunte, a beacon of academic excellence and unity, led The UWI Cave Hill with humility and warmth, mentoring generations and fostering harmony. Sir Shridath “Sonny” Ramphal, a visionary leader, served as UWI Chancellor and Commonwealth Secretary General, leaving his mark on Caribbean unity, democracy, and international diplomacy. Professor Sir Fitzroy “Roy” Augier, an iconic educator and historian, inspired the Caribbean to tell its own story, driving decolonisation and regional education through groundbreaking works and leadership. Professor Hazel Simmons- McDonald, a distinguished linguist and educator whose vibrant intellect and energy transformed every role she held at The UWI—from her impactful teaching and leadership at Cave Hill to shaping regional and global education as the first Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Open Campus. Her contributions as scholar, poet, and administrator enriched Caribbean intellectual life. These titans leave an enduring legacy, their spirits forever woven into the tapestry of Caribbean progress.
