UWI New York Fundraising Gala

On April 4, 2025, the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) transformed 583 Park Avenue into a vibrant celebration of Caribbean excellence. The 28th Annual Scholarship Awards Gala, themed ‘The Legacy Continues,’ honoured trailblazers whose vision and service have shaped nations and inspired generations. Sen. Audrey Marks—former Jamaican Ambassador to the United States and current Minister of Efficiency, Innovation and Digital Transformation—was celebrated with the Trailblazer Award for her pioneering diplomacy, steadfast service to the Caribbean diaspora, and unwavering commitment to nation-building. Other honourees were Althea Brown (Vice-Chancellor’s Award); William Mahfood (Chancellor’s Award and Corporate Award); Dominican Olympian Thea La Fond-Gadson (Salute to Caribbean Gold Award); Cedric Gayle, Esq. (Pelican Award); and Half Moon Hotel (Pinnacle Award). “We’re so honoured this evening by your presence,” Vice-Chancellor Beckles told the gala ceremony. “I honour you for your continued support of our university.”

In addressing patrons, New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged them to “make some more contributions tonight. “I thank you for what you do here in New York,” he added. Executive Director, AFUWI, Ann-Marie Grant noted that all proceeds from the Gala support scholarships for “financially disadvantaged yet high-achieving students at The UWI and since its founding, AFUWI has awarded about 650 scholarships and bursaries to students across the Caribbean. “The annual Gala is a cornerstone fundraising event, generating vital support for the next generation of Caribbean leaders,” Grant said.
