Future-Proofing: Visionary Advocacy for Sustainable Progress
One-UWI Transdisciplinary Disaster Risk Management and Resilience Research Cluster
In June 2025, The UWI launched the One-UWI Transdisciplinary Disaster Risk Management and Resilience Research Cluster, marking a significant step forward in disaster resilience research for the Caribbean. Announced alongside the 19th anniversary of UWI’s Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC), this new Cluster is designed to foster innovative, cross-disciplinary research that addresses the region’s most pressing challenges and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Aldrie Henry-Lee, along with Cluster co-leads Dr Evangeline Inniss- Springer and Mr Jeremy Collymore, emphasised the importance of shifting disaster management from reactive measures to proactive, equity-driven strategies. The Cluster brings together UWI faculty, DRRC staff, students, and regional partners, including the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), to broaden the scope of disaster research to include critical issues such as health, food security, water, infrastructure, and climate-induced vulnerabilities. Over the next two years, the Cluster aims to drive impactful research, foster youth engagement, enhance curricula, and influence policy, with a strong commitment to knowledge transfer and community partnership. This initiative reaffirms UWI’s leadership in building a resilient Caribbean future.
