Vice-Chancellor Beckles among leaders joining President Bill Clinton to discuss Caribbean Post-Disaster Recovery

From May 25 to 27, the Clinton Global Initiative will host the sixth convening of the Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery.

With President Clinton leading discussions focused on climate action and the key role of renewable energy in driving sustainable livelihoods in the region, the three-day virtual event focusses on the pandemic’s impact on the Caribbean region and highlights the most pressing needs and opportunities for collaboration between governments, the private sector, philanthropy, non-profits, and community leaders.

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles is set to deliver the keynote address in a special invitation-only roundtable session that will highlight opportunities for philanthropies and institutional donors to advance innovative community resilience and climate change mitigation approaches through investments in Caribbean organizations and projects.  Dr. Stacy Richards-Kennedy, University Director of the Office of Global Partnerships and Sustainable Futures will participate in the roundtable alongside representatives from leading international foundations, funding agencies and private sector corporations.  Dr. Richards-Kennedy will highlight the importance of partnerships to The UWI’s international recognition as a climate-smart university and to help build a more resilient Caribbean.

This private session will coincide with a week of events for CGI’s Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery, focused on driving resilience initiatives in key sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture and food security, and mental health. Notably, May 26’s plenary focuses on Caribbean Preparedness: Forecasts and Solutions for the 2021 Hurricane Season and Beyond.
