Hurricane Floyd 1999
Hurricane Floyd reached category 4 intensity in Bahamas leading to severe damage on Abaco, Cat Island, San Salvador and Eleothera whose population lost water, electricity and telephone communications and saw their houses partially or totally destroyed. This was one of the most intense hurricanes to affect the country with winds of more than 250kms per hour. A storm surge of around 6 meters above normal tide caused flooding in many coastal communities which lead to widespread damage in the outer islands.
