Hurricane Dean 2007

Made Landfall as a Category 5 hurricane. The districts of Corozal and Orange Walk were affected most. Corozal and Orange Walk at the time combined contained 41 % of the country’s poor and 9 % of the Country’s indigenous population. The Belize District, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker was also significantly affected. Some 6, 140 people were severely affected of the 311, 480 in the country – this is 2 % of the population. A total of 37, 703 lost their livelihoods in Agriculture and Tourism as a result of the storm.
A large population of homes that were completely destroyed possessed homes which could not withstand the onslaught of the hurricane made with sticks and palmetto.

Housing – a total of 339 units destroyed and 731 damaged, the total direct value of houses destroyed and damaged is BZ $20 million
Education – 81 schools buildings experienced minor to moderate damage, total structural damage is BZ 0.46 million (USD 0.23million)
Fishing – Economic loss of BZ $1.32 million
Tourism- loss of revenue because of evacuation of tourists estimated at BZ5.8 million due to evacuation
Damage to Infrastructure- 3.1 BZ million
Agriculture – 65.55 million USD

Grand Total Damage of 94. 87 USD million (does not include damage to environment, water, communication)
