1899 San Ciriaco Hurricane

Deaths: 334 deaths
Impact: The storm which had maximum winds of 150 mph caused 334 deaths on the islands of Andros (270 deaths) and Exuma (64 deaths). Loss to vessels and severe damage to boats at Inagua, Eleuthera and Rum Cay. Banana and Plantain plantations flattened on Long Island. Private homes and 2 churches damaged on San Salvador Island. In Nassau walls and fences were felled, a few public buildings were destroyed, 44 homes were demolished; the community of Gambier was wiped out; Local agriculture also seriously impacted with plantations and orchards being demolished and loosing many trees and fruits. In Nassau small crafts (boats) loss value of as estimated $50,000, damage to house property in Nassau- $5000. Exuma was devastated with boats and other forms of transport being destroyed. Several houses, churches and buildings were destroyed. In the island 97 buildings were destroyed and 131 damaged.
In Andros island to the North several settlements were devastated leading to many homes being flattened. Many crops were destroyed including peas, oranges, potatoes, oranges and grapefruit. Several vessels were beached leading to many causalities; 114 deaths occurred on land alone. Several schooners were driven ashore and severely damaged
