Torrential Rains 2004

Torrential rainfall between the period May 23 -25, 2004, from the system, resulted in devastating floods in Haiti and the Dominican Republic Although not a tropical storm or a hurricane, these two days of torrential rains caused extensive flooding throughout Haiti. This resulted in entire villages being washed away, forcing tens of thousands of people to abandon their homes. In the end, the death toll was approximately 2,400 people.

The primary reason that the flooding was so bad in rural areas, especially in the southeast, was because of deforestation and soil erosion in these regions
In Haiti the areas of Fond Verettes, Port-au-Prince and the surrounding country side were severely impacted by widespread flooding, flooded rivers, land and mudslides. The only main road between the capital Port-au-Prince and Fond Verettes was cut in several places. Transportation between the two areas was only possible by air. Over 5000 families were displaced.
